DSCP vs Logistics in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud: Key Insights from AFSUG Session

Table of Contents

On September 3, 2025, AFSUG hosted an engaging and insightful session exploring Digital Supply Chain & Planning (DSCP) versus Logistics in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud

The Session was led by Ravin Lala, SAP Product Champion for Logistics, who provided an end-to-end demo, explained deployment options and highlighted innovations that differentiate Public Cloud from Private Edition.

The User Experience: Simplicity and Integration

One of the standout demonstrations was the Transportation Management (TM) Cockpit

Unlike older ECC systems requiring multiple transaction codes, the Public Cloud experience is consolidated onto a single, user-friendly screen.

Here, transportation planners can:

  • View inbound, outbound, and inter-DC orders.
  • Mix and match orders for planning.
  • Automatically assign shipments to available resources (e.g., trucks, rail, air).
  • Seamlessly integrate freight orders with ERP processes.

This streamlined approach underscores SAP’s commitment to improving usability while ensuring full end-to-end integration across sales, procurement, warehousing, and finance.

Warehouse Management: Advanced but Embedded

The session highlighted that Warehouse Management (WM) in Public Cloud is embedded, meaning there is no separate licensing required. Innovations like the Warehouse Monitor—a central hub for monitoring inbound/outbound tasks, stock levels, and inventory processes—have made their way into Public Cloud after first appearing in Extended Warehouse Management (EWM).

Key WM capabilities include:

  • Picking, packing, and goods issue integration
  • RF and mobile device support for warehouse operators
  • Exception handling (short picks, damages, process codes)
  • Physical inventory and replenishment
  • Kitting and Value-Added Services (VAS)

Notably, functionalities such as wave management, serial number tracking, and batch management are available, bridging gaps that once existed between ECC WM and modern EWM.

Public vs Private Edition: What’s the Difference?

Ravine provided a clear comparison between Public Cloud WM/TM and Private Cloud (EWM/TM):

  • Public Cloud: Embedded WM and TM, rich functionality for standard processes, rapid innovation with quarterly updates, scalability and 99.9% SLA uptime.
  • Private Cloud (Extended WM & TM): Offers the full suite of advanced logistics capabilities—such as labour management, yard management, conveyor/MFS integration and advanced kitting—designed for highly complex, high-volume warehouses.

Best Practices and Accelerators

SAP’s Best Practices content emerged as a strong enabler for faster implementations. With preconfigured end-to-end processes (over 20 for WM alone), customers benefit from:

  • Predefined document flows and test scripts
  • Accelerated project timelines
  • Reduced implementation costs
  • Flexibility to adapt processes to specific business needs

Continuous Innovation

One of the biggest advantages of S/4HANA Public Cloud is its quarterly innovation cycle

Customers receive continuous updates without disruptive upgrades and can selectively enable new features when ready.

This ensures logistics operations stay aligned with the latest industry capabilities while maintaining a clean core.

Audience Q&A Highlights

  • Reverse Logistics: Supported in both TM and WM for Public Cloud.
  • Route Planning & Costing: Fully embedded in TM Cockpit.
  • Wave Management: Available in Public Cloud.
  • On-Prem vs Cloud: Functionality is nearly identical between Private Cloud and on-premise EWM.

Final Takeaway

The session made clear that SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud logistics capabilities have matured significantly, offering powerful, integrated and user-friendly tools for most organizations.

For companies with highly complex, high-volume logistics needs, Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) in Private Cloud or On-Prem may still be the better fit.

AFSUG Members left with a practical understanding of how to evaluate these options and how SAP’s roadmap continues to invest heavily in logistics innovation within the cloud.
